Introduction

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are non-digestible carbohydrates (prebiotics) produced through the enzymatic conversion of lactose (milk sugar). They consist of a chain of galactose units with a terminal glucose unit.

Among all commercial prebiotics, GOS is considered to have the structure most similar to the oligosaccharides naturally found in breast milk. This unique structure allows it to pass undigested through the stomach and small intestine to the colon, where it serves as a specific food source for beneficial bacteria. We offer high-quality GOS Powder and GOS Syrup, widely used in Infant Formulas, Functional Dairy, and Dietary Supplements to support digestive health and immune defense.

Functions

1.Gut Flora Balance (Bifidogenic Effect)

GOS is a highly selective substrate for beneficial gut bacteria. Clinical studies show that GOS consumption significantly increases the population of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus while inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella.

2.Immune System Modulation

By improving the gut micro-ecology, GOS helps regulate the body's immune response. It acts as a decoy receptor for pathogens, preventing them from adhering to the intestinal wall, thus reducing the incidence of infections and allergies (especially in infants).

3.Enhanced Mineral Absorption

Fermentation of GOS in the colon produces Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs), which lower the intestinal pH. This acidic environment increases the solubility and absorption of essential minerals, particularly Calcium, Magnesium, and Iron, promoting bone development.

4.Digestive Comfort

Helps prevent constipation by improving stool consistency and frequency. It also reduces symptoms of abdominal distension and pain associated with dysbiosis.

Applications

1.Infant Formula & Baby Food (Core Application)

• Usage: Added to stage 1-3 formulas to mimic the prebiotic benefits of breast milk.

• Benefit: Supports softer stools, reduces colic, and boosts developing immune systems.

2.Dairy Products

• Usage: Yogurts, Fermented milks, Cheese.

• Benefit: Synergistic effect with probiotics (Synbiotic concept); GOS is stable at low pH and pasteurization temperatures.

3.Dietary Supplements

• Usage: Prebiotic Sachets, Capsules, Fiber Blends.

• Benefit: A gentle soluble fiber that is well-tolerated and effective at low dosages (compared to FOS or Inulin).

4.Bakery & Functional Foods

• Usage: Bread, Cereals, Energy Bars, Sweets.

• Benefit: Moisture retention (humectant) and heat stability up to 160°C make it ideal for baked goods.

Method of Analysis of Lactoferrin

HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography)

• Why: To accurately differentiate and quantify the specific galacto-oligosaccharide chains from residual lactose, glucose, and galactose. This ensures the "Prebiotic Index" meets the label claim.

Reference Chromatogram of Lactoferrin Reference Substance

The HPLC profile shows a distribution of oligosaccharides with varying degrees of polymerization (DP 2-8), distinct from the simple sugar peaks of lactose and glucose.

Stability and Safety

Stability Studies

• Heat Stability: GOS is extremely heat stable (up to 160°C for 10 mins) and acid stable (pH 2-3), making it superior to FOS/Inulin in acidic beverages and baked goods.

• Shelf Life: 24 months in cool, dry conditions.

• Hygroscopicity: The powder is hygroscopic; keep packaging tightly sealed to prevent caking.

Safety & Handling (MSDS Summary)

• Classification: Non-hazardous food ingredient. GRAS status.

• Allergen: Contains Milk (Lactose). Labeling required in most regions.

• Handling: Standard food hygiene.

• Storage: Store in a cool, dry place away from strong odors and direct sunlight.

FAQ

What is the sweetness of GOS compared to sugar?

GOS is about 30% - 40% as sweet as sucrose (table sugar). It provides a clean sweetness profile and can be used to reduce sugar content in formulations while acting as a bulking agent.

Is GOS suitable for lactose-intolerant people?

While GOS is beneficial for gut health, the product does contain residual lactose (unless highly purified). Most lactose-intolerant individuals can tolerate the small amount of lactose present in standard GOS doses, but labeling as "Milk Allergen" is mandatory.

How does GOS differ from FOS (Fructo-oligosaccharides)?

GOS is animal-derived (milk) and more stable in acid/heat than plant-derived FOS. GOS is generally considered more "gas-free" (less flatulence) and better tolerated by sensitive stomachs compared to Inulin/FOS.
