Introduction

Lactoferrin (LF) is a globular glycoprotein belonging to the transferrin family, naturally found in bovine milk and human colostrum. It is renowned for its iron-binding capacity and its role as a first-line defense protein.
Due to its scarcity (extraction ratio approx. 1:10,000 from milk) and high value, it is often called "Pink Gold." We supply premium Bovine Lactoferrin isolated from fresh milk using cation-exchange chromatography followed by ultra-filtration. Our product is strictly Apo-Lactoferrin (low iron saturation), which offers the highest capacity to bind iron and fight pathogens, making it the preferred grade for Infant Formula, Dietary Supplements, and Functional Foods.

Functions
1.Antimicrobial & Antiviral Activity
Lactoferrin has a high affinity for ferric ions ($Fe^{3+}$). By sequestering free iron, it creates an iron-deficient environment that inhibits the growth of iron-dependent bacteria (bacteriostatic effect). It also prevents virus attachment to cell membranes.
2.Immune System Modulation
It stimulates the activation of phagocytes and Natural Killer (NK) cells. It balances the immune response, reducing excessive inflammation while boosting defense against infections.
3.Iron Absorption & Gut Health
Unlike inorganic iron supplements that cause constipation, Lactoferrin regulates iron absorption naturally. It also acts as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli in the infant and adult gut.

Applications
1.Infant Formula (Core Market)
• Grade: Lactoferrin 95% (Micro-filtered, Sterile).
• Purpose: To narrow the gap between bovine milk and human breast milk (which is naturally rich in Lactoferrin), supporting infant immunity.
2.Immunity Supplements
• Format: Capsules, Sachets (often paired with Colostrum or Probiotics).
• Claim: "First Line of Defense," "Iron Absorption Support."
3.Personal Care (Anti-Acne)
• Usage: Creams and Serums.
• Benefit: Its antimicrobial properties help reduce P. acnes bacteria and soothe skin inflammation.

Flow Chart
Chromatography & Cold Processing
1.Raw Material: Fresh Skimmed Milk (High quality, antibiotic-free).
2.Cation Exchange Chromatography: Adsorption of Lactoferrin onto resin (Separation from Casein/Whey).
3.Elution: Releasing Lactoferrin using salt solution.
4.Ultra-Filtration (UF): Desalination and concentration.
5.Micro-Filtration: Bacteria removal (Cold Sterilization) to avoid high-heat pasteurization.
6.Freeze Drying / Spray Drying: Low-temperature drying to preserve the 3D protein structure.
7.Sieving: Powder particle sizing.
8.QC Testing: Purity (HPLC), Protein content, Iron content.
9.Packing: 1kg/5kg Vacuum Aluminum Bags.

Method of Analysis of Lactoferrin
HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography)
• Why: We use Reverse-Phase HPLC to specifically quantify the Lactoferrin molecule. Simple protein tests (like Kjeldahl) measure total nitrogen and cannot distinguish Lactoferrin from other whey proteins or adulterants.
• Iron Saturation: We measure iron content to confirm it is the Apo- form (unsaturated), which has higher antimicrobial potency than Holo-Lactoferrin.
Reference Chromatogram of Lactoferrin Reference Substance
The HPLC chromatogram reveals a dominant, symmetrical peak for Lactoferrin monomer. The absence of aggregated protein peaks indicates that the drying process was gentle and preserved the protein's native structure.
Stability and Safety
Stability Studies
• Heat Sensitivity: CRITICAL. Lactoferrin denatures at temperatures > 70°C. Do not boil.
• Storage: Store in a cool, dry place (Refrigeration < 10°C recommended for long-term storage).
• Shelf Life: 24 months in unopened original packaging.
Safety & Handling (MSDS Summary)
• Classification: Dairy Allergen (Milk Protein).
• Safety: GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe).
• Handling: Avoid moisture. Reseal immediately after use.

FAQ
Why is your Lactoferrin pink?
Bovine Lactoferrin naturally binds a small amount of iron, giving it a characteristic salmon-pink color. If the powder is pure white, it may be denatured, bleached, or have very low purity. Pink is a sign of quality.
What is the difference between Apo-Lactoferrin and Holo-Lactoferrin?
• Apo-Lactoferrin: Low iron saturation (<20%). It has "empty seats" to capture iron from the environment, making it a strong antimicrobial. (This is what we sell). • Holo-Lactoferrin: Saturated with iron. It is used specifically for iron delivery but has lower antimicrobial activity.
Can I put it in hot coffee?
No. Temperatures above 70°C will denature the protein and reduce its biological activity. It is best added to warm or cold liquids, or yogurt.
