Introduction

P&K

Hawthorn Flavonoids are the primary bioactive compounds extracted from the berries and leaves of the Hawthorn plant (Crataegus species). For centuries, Hawthorn has been the "Herb of the Heart" in both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and European Herbalism.

Our extract is standardized to Total Flavonoids (calculated as Vitexin or Rutin), ensuring therapeutic efficacy. These powerful antioxidants act directly on the cardiovascular system, making Hawthorn one of the most widely utilized botanicals for supporting healthy blood pressure and cardiac rhythm.

Functions

1.Cardiovascular Support (MOA)

• Coronary Dilation: Flavonoids relax the blood vessels (vasodilation), increasing coronary blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart muscle.

• Inotropic Effect: Enhances myocardial contractility (strength of heart beat) without increasing heart rate, improving cardiac output.

• ACE Inhibition: Mildly inhibits Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE), helping to regulate blood pressure naturally.

2.Lipid Metabolism & Digestion

• Lipid Lowering: Promotes the excretion of cholesterol and inhibits LDL oxidation, preventing plaque buildup.

• Digestive Aid: Stimulates the secretion of gastric enzymes (pepsin), aiding in the digestion of fats and meat (traditional TCM use).

3.Antioxidant Protection

• Free Radical Scavenging: High concentrations of OPCs (Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins) and Quercetin derivatives protect endothelial cells from oxidative stress.

Applications

Dietary Supplements:

• Heart Health Formulas: Tablets or capsules for hypertension and mild heart failure (Stage I/II).

• Cholesterol Support: Often blended with Red Yeast Rice or CoQ10.

Functional Foods & Beverages:

• Herbal Teas: Soluble powder for "Heart Care" tea blends.

• Digestive Drinks: Used in functional shots to aid digestion after heavy meals.

Cosmetics:

• Skin Circulation: Added to creams to improve microcirculation and reduce redness.

Pharmaceuticals:

• TCM Formulations: Raw material for patent medicines targeting angina and indigestion.

Flow Chart

1.Raw Material: Selection of ripe, red Hawthorn berries (or leaves for specific leaf extracts).

2.Cleaning & Drying: Removal of impurities and low-temperature drying.

3.Extraction: Reflux extraction with Ethanol/Water solvent.

4.Filtration: Separation of fruit pulp.

5.Concentration: Vacuum evaporation to recover solvent.

6.Purification (Resin Adsorption): Critical step to enrich Flavonoids and remove sugars/acids.

7.Spray Drying: Conversion to fine reddish-brown powder.

8.Sieving (80 Mesh) & Testing: Final QC for Assay and Heavy Metals.

Method of Analysis of Lactoferrin

UV-Vis Spectrophotometry is the standard method for determining Total Flavonoids.

• Standard: Rutin or Vitexin is used as the reference standard.

• Procedure: The sample reacts with Al(NO3)3 or NaNO2-Al(NO3)3 to form a colored complex, the absorbance of which is measured at a specific wavelength (e.g., 510nm).

High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) allows for the identification of specific markers such as Vitexin-2"-rhamnoside, Hyperoside, and Isoquercitrin, confirming the botanical identity and quality.

Stability and Safety

Stability Studies

• Hygroscopicity: Hawthorn extract, especially fruit extract, is hygroscopic due to natural fruit acids and sugars.

• Storage: Must be stored in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry place (<25°C). Use of desiccant packs in drums is recommended.

• Shelf Life: 24 months.

Safety & Handling (MSDS Summary)

• Classification: GRAS (Food Supplement).

• Interactions: May potentiate the effect of digoxin or beta-blockers. Consult a physician if taking heart medication.

• Handling: Non-hazardous powder.

FAQ

What is the difference between Hawthorn Berry and Leaf Extract?

• Berry Extract: Traditional digestive aid and heart tonic. Rich in procyanidins and fruit acids. • Leaf Extract: Higher concentration of Flavonoids (Vitexin). Often preferred for blood pressure and clinical cardiac support applications. We supply both.

Is your extract water soluble?

Yes, our standard extracts (e.g., 5-20% Flavonoids) are water-soluble, making them suitable for liquid applications like tinctures and drinks.

Can you customize the assay method?

Yes. Different markets prefer different standards (e.g., European Pharmacopoeia uses Hyperoside via HPLC; Chinese Pharmacopoeia uses Rutin via UV). Please specify your testing requirement when quoting.
