Introduction

P&K

Stigmasterol is a naturally occurring unsaturated phytosterol extracted from the deodorizer distillate of soybean oil. It is structurally distinguished from β-Sitosterol by the presence of a double bond at the C-22 position.

This unique chemical structure makes Stigmasterol the ideal starting material for the semi-synthesis of steroid hormones, particularly Progesterone and Cortisone. Unlike generic phytosterol mixtures, our product undergoes a rigorous fractionation process to achieve ≥95% purity, meeting the strict requirements of pharmaceutical API manufacturers.

Stigmasterol is a naturally derived plant sterol widely utilized in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and food industries. Extracted from sources such as soybeans, vegetables, and various plant oils, it is recognized for its high purity, consistent quality, and chemical stability. Leading manufacturers employ advanced extraction and purification techniques to ensure reliable performance and compliance with international quality standards. Stigmasterol is typically supplied in powder or crystalline form, with customizable particle size and purity grades to meet specific industrial requirements. Its excellent solubility in organic solvents and compatibility with other ingredients make it a versatile raw material for formulation development. Available in bulk quantities or specialized packaging, Stigmasterol is designed to support large-scale manufacturing, research and development, and production processes across a range of applications. Strict quality control, standardized production processes, and traceability ensure product reliability and uniformity. Its plant-based origin and consistent physicochemical properties make Stigmasterol a preferred choice for companies seeking a high-quality sterol for formulation, research, or manufacturing purposes.

Functions

1. Steroid Hormone Synthesis (Precursor)

Stigmasterol is chemically degraded via ozonolysis to produce Stigmasterol Acetate and subsequently Progesterone, a vital hormone used in contraceptives and hormone replacement therapies. It is a cost-effective alternative to diosgenin.

2. Cholesterol Management

Like other phytosterols, Stigmasterol competes with cholesterol for micelle formation in the gut, effectively blocking cholesterol absorption and lowering serum LDL levels.

3. Anti-Inflammatory Activity

Studies suggest Stigmasterol exhibits potent anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory mediators and matrix metalloproteinases, potentially aiding in osteoarthritis management.

Applications

Pharmaceutical Intermediates:

• Steroid Synthesis: The primary industrial use. Used to manufacture Progesterone, Androgens, Corticosteroids, and Vitamin D3 analogs.

Nutraceuticals:

• Heart Health: Formulated into tablets or capsules (often blended with Beta-Sitosterol) for cholesterol-lowering claims.

Cosmetics:

• Skin Barrier Repair: Used for its regenerative properties in anti-aging creams.

Method of Analysis of Lactoferrin

We use Gas Chromatography (GC) for the quantitative analysis of Stigmasterol.

• Why GC? HPLC often struggles to resolve the peak overlap between Stigmasterol and Beta-Sitosterol due to their structural similarity. GC provides superior separation, ensuring the 95% purity claim is accurate and not inflated by other sterols.

Reference Chromatogram of Lactoferrin Reference Substance

The chromatogram shows a dominant Stigmasterol peak (>95% area). The Beta-Sitosterol and Campesterol peaks are minimal, confirming high separation efficiency.

Stability and Safety

Stability Studies

• Shelf Life: 24 months.

• Oxidation: The double bond at C-22 makes Stigmasterol slightly more sensitive to oxidation than saturated sterols.

• Storage: Store in tightly sealed containers filled with nitrogen if possible, in a cool, dry place (<25°C), away from direct light.

Safety & Handling (MSDS Summary)

• Classification: Non-hazardous substance.

• Safety: Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for food use.

• Handling: Avoid dust generation. Wear safety glasses and gloves.

FAQ

What is the main difference between Stigmasterol and Beta-Sitosterol?

They are almost identical, but Stigmasterol has a double bond at C-22. This double bond is the "chemical handle" that allows chemists to cleave the molecule and synthesize hormones like Progesterone. Beta-Sitosterol lacks this bond and cannot be easily converted.

Can I use this for food fortification?

Yes, but for general cholesterol lowering, our Mixed Phytosterols (95%) is more cost-effective. Pure Stigmasterol (95%) is premium priced and usually reserved for pharmaceutical synthesis or specialized research.

Is your Stigmasterol soy-free?

Our standard commercial scale product is derived from Soybeans. If you require a soy-free source (e.g., from Pine phytosterols), please contact us for custom separation, though the yield is typically lower and cost is higher.
