In daily life, we are often reminded to "supplement calcium", and various advertisements and texts are also telling the importance of "calcium" for the health of the body, especially for special groups such as teenagers and the elderly.
So, who exactly needs calcium supplementation? Where is calcium located for the nutrients required by the body? Today, let's talk about mineral supplements~
What are minerals?
Human tissue contains almost all the elements that exist in nature. Among them, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen are the four main elements that make up organic compounds such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Most of the other elements act in the body in the form of inorganic compounds, collectively referred to as minerals or inorganic salts.
Minerals are important substances that make up human tissues and maintain normal physiological activities. Without minerals, various metabolic activities of the body cannot proceed normally.
According to the amount of minerals in the human body, they can be divided into constant elements and trace elements. Constant elements refer to minerals in the human body with a content greater than 0.01% of body weight, while trace elements refer to minerals in the human body with a content less than 0.01% of body weight. According to existing research data, trace elements can be further divided into three categories: essential trace elements, potentially essential trace elements, and trace elements with potential toxicity but low doses that may have functional effects.
How to measure and evaluate the required amount of minerals?
Minerals cannot be synthesized in the human body, and in the daily metabolic process, a certain amount of inorganic salts are excreted through feces, urine, bile, hair, nails, dandruff, and other pathways. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously supplement the body's mineral needs through diet, especially the constant elements and essential trace elements listed above.
So how many minerals does the body really need? How to measure and evaluate the required amount of a certain mineral element? Nutritionally, it is expressed as Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs). DRIs include but are not limited to the three indicators listed below.
Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) refers to the level of nutrient intake that can meet the needs of the vast majority of individuals (97%~98%) in a specific gender, age, and physiological condition group.
Adequate intake (AI) refers to the intake of a certain nutrient in a healthy population obtained through observation or experimentation.
Tolerated upper intake level (UL) refers to the maximum limit of average daily intake of nutrients.
Simply put, AI and RNI can serve as target values for an individual's daily intake of the nutrient, while UL is not a recommended intake level. When setting dietary goals, nutrient intake should be kept below UL.
Due to the narrow range between the physiological requirements and toxic doses of certain minerals, excessive intake should be avoided to prevent serious toxic effects. When supplementing with supplements and other health products in daily life, special attention should be paid to the dosage of the supplement. Do not blindly exceed the dosage to avoid excessive intake of the mineral and damage to the body's health.
